You've probably noticed the PETA-approved logo on our bags and website. Maybe you've wondered what it actually means or whether it really matters.
We think it does. Here's the full story.
First, what is PETA Approved?
PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) runs a certification program called PETA-Approved Vegan. To earn it, a brand must submit every component of its product for independent verification: the outer material, the lining, the hardware, the thread, the adhesives. All of it.
The certification confirms that a product contains absolutely zero animal-derived materials. No leather. No suede. No wool. No fur. No silk. No exotic skins. Nothing.
Once certified, brands are listed in PETA's global directory of approved vegan products. It's not a one-time stamp; it has to be maintained. And for us, that accountability is exactly the point.
Why We Pursue it?
Espe was built by animal lovers. That's not marketing, it's just true. Our team cares deeply about animals, which is why cruelty-free has been at the core of what we do from day one.
But here's the thing: "cruelty-free" gets used loosely in fashion. Brands make claims. Shoppers have to take their word for it. We didn't want that. We wanted something our customers could verify independently. A third-party certification that meant our commitment was real and on the record.
PETA approval gives you that. You don't have to trust us just because we say so. You can look us up.
What's inside every Espe bag?
All our handbags and wallets are made from high-quality polyurethane (PU) vegan leather and we chose it deliberately, not by default.
PU vegan leather is durable, flexible, and genuinely performs beautifully in everyday life. It handles Canadian winters (down to -32°C) without cracking. It wipes clean easily. It holds its shape. It has a significantly lower environmental footprint than standard PVC alternatives. And honestly? It feels like the real thing because for us, it is the real thing.
We're not cutting corners to hit a price point. We're choosing materials that align with our values and still deliver the quality you deserve.
What does it mean when you carry Espe?
When you pick up a PETA-approved bag, you're not making a sacrifice. You're making a choice, and that choice has been verified.
It means no animal was harmed to make your bag. It means the claim has been checked, not just stated. It means the brand you're supporting has made ethical production a non-negotiable, not an add-on.
For women who want their style to reflect their values; without giving up design, quality, or personality. That matters. A lot.
PETA approval is one piece of who we are. We're also proud supporters of the Ontario SPCA, helping animals in need right here in Canada. And as an independent, family-owned brand based in Toronto, we get to make decisions that reflect what we actually believe, not what a corporate bottom line demands.
We're not here to lecture anyone about their choices. We're here to make beautiful, joyful bags that happen to be cruelty-free and to make that choice as easy and stylish as possible.
Every Espe bag is PETA-approved. Every single one. No animal-derived materials, independently verified, designed in Canada with care.
Fashion should feel good to wear and to stand behind.
