What Is RFID Protection And Do You Need It?

What Is RFID Protection And Do You Need It?

Every Espe wallet and smartphone holder comes with built-in RFID protection. Here's what that actually means, and why it matters more than you might think.

All of our wallets and smartphone holders are RFID protected.

That's not a feature we added as an afterthought; it's something we built in because we genuinely believe your bag should look after you, not just look good.

So, What Is RFID?

RFID stands for Radio Frequency Identification, the technology behind your tap-to-pay credit card, your transit card, your work access badge, and many modern passports. When you tap at a payment terminal, a small radio signal wakes up the chip in your card and reads your data in a split second, no physical contact needed.

It's incredibly convenient. But that same wireless communication is also what makes these cards vulnerable.

What Is RFID Skimming?

RFID skimming is when someone uses a hidden reader device to scan your card's chip without you knowing. In theory, a bad actor with the right equipment could walk close to you in a crowd and silently pull your card data without ever touching your bag.

Modern cards do have encryption, so it's not as simple as it sounds. But the risk is real, and it's especially worth thinking about when you're travelling, commuting, or anywhere busy.

Cards most commonly at risk:
• Contactless credit and debit cards (look for the Wi-Fi symbol)
• Passports with a biometric chip
• Work access and hotel key cards

How Does RFID Blocking Work?

RFID-blocking materials contain a thin layer of metallic fabric — usually copper or aluminium — that acts as a Faraday cage. It absorbs and deflects radio signals so that an external scanner simply can't reach your card's chip.

It's completely passive, no battery, no app, no activation. Your cards sit inside your Espe wallet as normal, and the protection happens quietly in the background.

"Your bag should look after you, not just look good."

Why We Include It in Every Wallet

We think protection shouldn't be a premium add-on - it should just be part of a well-made wallet. So whether you're grabbing one of our slim zip wallets, a smartphone pouch, or a wristlet, RFID blocking is already there.

A FEW EVERYDAY HABITS THAT ALSO HELP

Turn on transaction alerts on your cards - you'll know instantly if something's off
Use Apple Pay or Google Pay where you can - your real card number is never shared
Keep your passport in its cover when not in use - many covers include RFID blocking too

The Bottom Line

RFID skimming is a real risk - not something to panic about, but worth taking seriously. The easiest thing you can do is carry your cards in a wallet that's already got you covered. Which, if you're carrying Espe, you already are.
